CBD is the acronym for Cannabidiol, a natural component of Cannabis Oil and Hemp Oil that is extracted from the plant. The international definition of hemp (as opposed to cannabis) was developed by a Canadian researcher, Ernest Small, in 1971. Small’s arbitrary 0.3 percent THC (Tetrahydrocannabinol, the psychoactive component present in cannabis) limit has become standard around the world as the official limit for legal hemp.
CBD accounts for up to 40% of the hemp plant’s extract and is considered to have a wide variety of wellness properties. Cannabidiol is one of hemp’s many non-psychoactive compounds, meaning that CBD Hemp oil does not get users high and that it cannot be abused, making it legal in all 50 states.
Cannabis contains several hundred compounds including various flavinoids, and aromatic terpenes in addition to CBD and THC. Compared to whole-plant CBD-rich cannabis, hemp derived CBD has a lower cannabinoid content and negligible amounts of THC. Scientific studies have established that CBD and THC interact synergistially to enhance each other’s therapeutic effects. Scientists at the California Pacific Medical Center in San Francisco determined that a combination of CBD and THC has a more potent effect than either compound alone when tested on brain and breast cancer cell lines. Extensive clinical research has demonstrated that CBD combined with THC is more beneficial for neuopathic pain, and that both CBD and THC stimulate neurogenesis, the creation of new brain cells.
